CHAPTER NINE

Eli walked slowly towards the school football field. He hadn't slept well and had been plagued by dreams of Tess. He didn't understand what was going on in his brain, it had been nothing but a mess since he had first laid eyes on her.

He was tired and his body was sore. He needed sleep, needed it desperately, but it seemed each time he closed his eyes, she was there. He had to do something to relieve the tension, hopefully kicking a ball around with Alex would help.

"Hey Eli," Alex called from the field. He had balls lined up along the eighteen yard box and was taking time to line up each shot before kicking towards the goal.

Eli watched his friend for a moment before joining him on the pitch.

"I'll be in goals, yeah?" he asked heading towards the box.

"Sure," Alex said lining up the balls again.

They took turns kicking balls into the net, trying to get it past the other one. Eli was in front by three when they switched to a game of one on one. It felt good to exert some pent up energy and Eli powered through Alex's defence, scoring time and time again.

"Enough," Alex said laughingly as Eli set up from half way again, "I think you've beat me enough for today."

They flopped down on the grass and drank greedily from their water bottles. The sun was hot and they sweated freely. The exercise had gone a long way to improving Eli's mood.

"So what's going on with you and Tess?" Alex asked and Eli choked on his water.

He coughed to clear his throat, "Nothing," he said.

"Are you sure?" Alex asked, "You two looked pretty cosy to me."

"Ha," Eli laughed, "How could you notice anything last night? You were far too wrapped up in Shayne."

He sighed, "I know."

"So are you two an item now or what?" Eli asked, deflecting the questions away from himself.

"I don't know," Alex replied, "I've just broken up with Tamra. I like Shayne, always have, but is it too soon?"

"You know my answer to that," Eli asked, "I don't think you should get too serious with anyone. Look at the debacle with Tamra, why would you willingly walk back into something like that?"

"But Shayne is not Tamra," Alex tried to explain, but Eli just rolled his eyes.

"You need to hand in your man card," Eli said, "'Cause you are starting to sound like a chick."

Alex laughed, "Fair enough," he said, "Maybe I should cool it for a while."

"That a boy," Eli said, "We can be two bachelors out for a good time."

"So you're not interested in Tess?"

Eli groaned, "No, I'm not."

Alex shook his head, "I don't believe you," he said, "I've seen the way you look at her."

"It doesn't matter how I look at her," Eli admitted quietly, "She doesn't want anything to do with me."

"I didn't think she knew you that well," Alex said laughing.

"Laugh it up funny boy," Eli said, "We can't all have women falling at our feet."
